Newsom Criticizes Tuberville’s Social Media Post
California Governor Gavin Newsom recently took aim at Alabama Senator Tommy Tuberville over a controversial social media post that prompted backlash.
Tuberville had shared an image that juxtaposed scenes from the September 11 attacks with a photo of New York Mayor Zoran Mamdani. Newsom responded with a post on X, personally attacking Tuberville and accusing him of harboring racist views.

Tommy Tuberville proved to the world that getting hit in the head with a soccer ball can turn you into a racist asshole. Congratulations, Tommy. https://t.co/KLdG04vpwx

Mamdani defended himself, suggesting it would be good to see politicians express similar outrage over issues like childhood hunger as they do over his choices, such as sharing meals with locals.
Let there be as much outrage from politicians in Washington when children go hungry as there is when I break bread with New Yorkers. https://t.co/IibwxE1SDr

The controversy flared after Mamdani hosted his first iftar dinner at New York City Hall, an event to break the fast during Ramadan. Prior to this, he had invited activist Mahmoud Khalil and his family to the Gracie residence for a meal.
Some criticism arose due to Khalil’s previous statements regarding the October 7 attack by Hamas, where he referred to the event as a pivotal moment in the Palestinian cause. Notably, Khalil had refused to condemn Hamas in an interview, arguing that calls for condemnation were disingenuous.
