Billionaire Barry Diller Expresses Interest in Acquiring CNN
Barry Diller, a well-known businessman, recently indicated his desire to purchase CNN, which he views as having been poorly managed. In an interview with Graham Bessinger, Diller signaled his willingness to make an offer if the current owners, Skydance/Paramount, chose to sell.
“Over the past few years… I’d say the likelihood of me acquiring it is perhaps 30 to 40 percent,” he mentioned, emphasizing his keen interest in the network.
Diller believes CNN has significant potential and could be much more competitive than it currently is. “I think there’s great value in being fully competitive, but it’s not happening right now,” he added.
When questioned about potential changes he’d implement, Diller was clear: “Oh, in every way. Look, feel, be satisfied. In every way.” He doesn’t attribute CNN’s challenges to lack of talent but rather to management pressures that have hindered optimal performance.
He also pointed out that the network is not only lacking in competition but its declining viewership corresponds with reduced revenue. “The facts confirm that viewership has gone down, which means revenue has gone down,” he stated.
There’s a strong sentiment among certain critics about CNN, with a particularly extreme perspective suggesting a dramatic overhaul might be necessary, even involving a metaphorical burning down of the brand. It’s an exaggerated thought, perhaps, but it reflects a frustration with the network’s current standing.
While Diller has had substantial success in his career, there remains a prevailing notion that CNN may be too far gone to revitalize. “Cancer within the tissue cannot be cured,” some might say. Perhaps there’s hope for a revival, but opinions vary.
Ultimately, it’s easy to speculate when it’s not your own investment on the line.
