Abhijit Dubey, who is the President and CEO of NTT Data, recently appeared on “Morning with Maria.” He shared insights about the new Nvidia-powered AI factory, competition in global data center markets, concerns regarding military applications of AI, and future technological advancements.
On Friday, Google declared its plan to invest $1 billion in developing its data center infrastructure in North Carolina over the next two years. This effort will particularly enhance the facilities in Lenoir, where Google has been operating for 15 years, located conveniently between its data center and its office in Durham.
The data center in Lenoir plays a crucial role in supporting various Google services such as Maps, Photos, Search, Workspaces, and YouTube. Lenoir Mayor Joseph Gibbons expressed that these investments demonstrate Google’s ongoing commitment to the state. He stated, “This funding will bolster our workforce, boost economic development prospects, and help North Carolina maintain its innovative edge.”
Caldwell County Commission Chairman Randy Church also emphasized the importance of such investments, noting they are critical for community enhancement. He mentioned that they would generate new job opportunities and contribute to social progress in the long run.
Aside from enhancing data center infrastructure, Google announced a partnership with Blue Ridge Community Action, Blue Ridge Energy, and Advanced Energy. Together, they will contribute $2 million to the Energy Impact Fund, which aims to improve energy affordability and efficiency for low- to moderate-income families and K-12 schools, especially considering the rising electricity costs driven by data centers and the ongoing AI boom.
The initiative will also support community solar programs to alleviate energy burdens and increase renewable energy access for local residents. John Jacob, Blue Ridge Energy’s marketing director, shared that Google’s support embodies a collaborative spirit in community development.
Additionally, Google is committing a three-year grant of $270,000 to Communities In Schools of Caldwell County (CISCC) to create a Workforce Development and Digital Equity Fund. This initiative will cooperate with local schools and Caldwell Community College & Technical Institute to dismantle barriers for vocational training until 2027.
CCC&TI President Mark Porch commented that this partnership will offer local students necessary resources for transitioning into the workforce, underlining that it represents a long-term investment in the community’s economic health. Furthermore, Google has also pledged $100,000 to the City of Lenoir for the renovation of the historic high school.
