Team USA Advances in World Baseball Classic
Mark DeRosa is taking a step back, at least for the moment.
A major embarrassment was averted.
While Team USA didn’t exactly dominate, they managed to secure their advancement without needing any favors from others.
What the Americans needed was a match against a neighboring country that has become somewhat of a punching bag for them lately.
In the World Baseball Classic quarterfinals held in Houston, the United States faced off against Canada. Despite some nervous moments, they came out on top with a score of 5-3.
It’s been a clean sweep for the U.S., especially after both their men’s and women’s hockey teams triumphed over Canada in the Winter Olympics finals just last month.
Furthermore, the Los Angeles Dodgers had a victory over the Toronto Blue Jays in last year’s World Series.
In the World Baseball Classic, the U.S. has clinched five consecutive wins against Canada, including a decisive 12-1 victory in 2023.
Now, the American team will head into a semifinal match-up against the Dominican Republic, which appears to be a crucial contest in the tournament. The Dominican team bested South Korea in their quarterfinal, aided by a mercy rule-triggering home run from the Yankees’ Austin Wells.
The Dominican roster packs quite a punch, featuring stars like Fernando Tatis Jr., Ketel Marte, Juan Soto, Vladimir Guerrero Jr., Manny Machado, Junior Caminero, and Julio Rodriguez among others.
Just a note: since it’s a single-elimination round, the next game could certainly be a doozy.
