U.S. Continues to Outsmart Canada in Major Sports
For the third time in under a month, the United States has thwarted Canada’s hopes in the world of sports. Following intense victories in the men’s and women’s Olympic hockey gold medal matches, the U.S. baseball team claimed a 5-3 win over Canada in the quarterfinals of the 2026 World Baseball Classic.
American pitcher Logan Webb kicked off the game with an impressive performance, while the batting lineup made sure to capitalize early on, setting a commanding pace that Canada struggled to match. By the sixth inning, the U.S. had pulled ahead to a significant 5-0 lead thanks to contributions from players like Kyle Schwarber and Alex Bregman.
However, Canada made a push in the sixth inning, scoring two runs with a standout home run from Bo Naylor, bringing a glimmer of hope. They even had an opportunity to level the score in the seventh but fell short after a series of outs.
Mason Miller rounded out the game for the U.S. in the ninth inning, securing their spot in the semifinals against the Dominican Republic. On the other side, Canada faced yet another challenging defeat against its southern neighbor as underlying geopolitical tensions continue to linger between the two nations.
Interestingly, Jack Hughes, known for scoring the decisive goal during the Olympic hockey final, reached out to encourage the U.S. baseball squad ahead of the game, as reported by team manager Mark DeRosa. Hughes’ gesture seems to resonate, with plans for the baseball players to don hockey jerseys during batting practice, fostering a unifying spirit among the athletes.
