U.S. Bombing of Iran’s Kharg Island
On Friday, President Trump revealed that the U.S. had carried out a bombing raid on Kharg Island in Iran. This island is crucial for the nation, housing its largest oil terminal and serving as a significant node for crude oil exports.
“Just moments ago, at my direction, U.S. Central Command conducted one of the most powerful bombing raids in the history of the Middle East, completely obliterating all military targets on Iran’s treasured island of Kharg,” Trump stated.
Kharg Island is approximately 55 miles off the southwestern coast of Iran, near Bushehr province. It is roughly the size of Central Park in New York City, yet its role in Iran’s economy is vital.
With the capacity to load around 7 million barrels of oil each day, it serves as the primary export route for about 90% of Iran’s crude oil, most of which is sent to China and India. This underscores its significance for not just Iran, but the global oil market as a whole.
This also marks Kharg Island as one of Iran’s most sensitive infrastructures; military actions there could lead to disruptions in oil supply, impacting transportation and energy prices in the region.
Trump emphasized that while the U.S. had intentionally avoided damaging the oil infrastructure, this could change if Iran interfered with shipping in the Strait of Hormuz.
He stated, “Although our weapons are the most powerful and sophisticated the world has ever known, I have chosen not to wipe out the island’s oil infrastructure for reasons of common sense. However, if Iran or anyone else disrupts free and safe shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, I will immediately reconsider this decision.”
The ongoing conflict in the Middle East is causing concern over the security of the Strait of Hormuz, which is critical for global energy supplies. This narrow passageway transports around 20 million barrels of oil daily, highlighting how a crisis could affect energy markets significantly.
The rising tensions are already having repercussions in the energy sector, with benchmark oil prices jumping above $100 a barrel, marking the first instance of such a spike since 2022. This increase is likely reflecting at the gas stations, with the national average for regular gasoline rising to about $3.63 per gallon, while diesel rose to $4.89 per gallon.
As energy costs surge, the White House is looking into ways to protect commercial vessels passing through the Strait, including using emergency stockpiles to mitigate impacts.
Before departing for Mar-a-Lago, Trump mentioned that the U.S. Navy might start escorting tankers through the Straits “soon.” He also reassured reporters that he would keep shipping lanes open and threatened serious repercussions if Iran attempted to interfere.
Trump asserted, “We will not allow a terrorist regime to take the world hostage and try to cut off the world’s oil supply. If Iran did anything to do that, it would be hit on a much more severe level.”
“In the long term, oil supplies will be dramatically safer without the threat of Iranian ships, drones, and missiles,” he added.
