There’s been a buzz about Albert Pujols potentially stepping into a Major League role, with some suggesting he’s more than ready for it.
Pujols, set to lead the Dominican Republic in the upcoming 2026 World Baseball Classic, was a candidate for several managerial positions in MLB this offseason, though those opportunities didn’t pan out.
His remarkable playing career raises questions about whether he can replicate that success as a manager.
Dusty Baker, a veteran manager, believes Pujols will transition smoothly into this new role.
“It’s not a future thing; he should be managing now,” Baker remarked, having previously coached in the WBC. He added that many coaches lack on-field experience, just as he once did during his coaching journey.
Baker emphasized, “Many players today don’t bring the level of experience, knowledge, or respect that Albert possesses.”
Juan Soto, who played alongside Pujols during the WBC, expressed how impactful it is to have such a legendary figure in the clubhouse, noting that Pujols truly understands the players’ emotions.
“It’s incredible to have a leader like Albert guiding us,” Soto shared, explaining that Pujols relates to their experiences, decisions, and even their swings.
Pujols had discussions with the Padres, Orioles, and Angels about managerial roles during the offseason.
However, he acknowledges that each team is taking a different path and admits he’s still learning the ropes of this managerial aspect.
“I’ve been around great coaches—Tony La Russa, Dave Roberts, Joe Maddon, and others,” Pujols mentioned. “I learn something new every day and maintain an open mindset. After every game, I reflect and think about how I could improve.”
