DeRosa Addresses World Baseball Classic Criticism

Mark DeRosa, the manager of Team USA, is eager to clarify the criticism aimed at him during this year’s World Baseball Classic.

In an interview during Team USA’s 5-3 quarterfinal victory over Canada, he was asked about the backlash from fans regarding his management decisions. His response was quite straightforward.

“I have a relentless passion for this game and a strong belief in every player on this roster,” he said on a Fox broadcast, commenting on his approach to leading the U.S. team.

He added, “I don’t think A and B exist. They’re all A,” emphasizing that every player is equally important.

These remarks came after DeRosa made several questionable statements during the WBC, including incorrectly stating that his team had secured a quarterfinal spot when that was not the case.

“Kudos to Italy. It’s strange. Even though we have a ticket to the quarterfinals, we still want to win this game because Mexico actually plays Italy,” he said on MLB Network prior to the game. “This match is crucial for us.”

In preparation for an important pool play game against Italy, he shuffled the lineup, sharing in the same interview that he wanted to get certain players “on their feet.”

However, that strategy didn’t pay off; Team USA lost 8-6 to Italy, placing them on the edge of elimination.

After that match, DeRosa acknowledged his errors, admitting that his earlier comments about the team’s status were wrong.

“I misspoke,” he explained. “I was chatting with some friends and completely misjudged the numbers. We understood that if we lost tonight in terms of goals conceded, points scored, and outs, Mexico would play Italy and we needed to put all that together.”

“So, I just misspoke,” he reiterated.

Looking ahead, Team USA is set to face the Dominican Republic in the semifinals.
