Drone Attack Targets U.S. Diplomatic Facility in Baghdad

On Tuesday, a drone strike, suspected to be a retaliation from a pro-Iranian militia, hit a significant U.S. diplomatic site in Baghdad, according to reports from the Washington Post. The facility in question was the Baghdad Diplomatic Support Center, though, fortunately, no injuries were reported immediately following the attack.

Six drones were launched towards the compound, and five were successfully intercepted. Reports indicated that one drone crashed near a guard tower, prompting alerts for individuals inside the facility to “hunker down and take cover.”

“Ongoing accountability” was mentioned in the warnings issued post-attack.

The Iraqi Ministry of Defense condemned the drone and missile attacks on local air bases but refrained from specifically addressing the U.S. facilities or Iran in its statements. The Ministry emphasized that the air bases remain fully sovereign and governed by Iraqi law, asserting the absence of foreign military personnel.

Security officials informed the Washington Post that this likely involved militias from Iraq’s Islamic Resistance Movement, a coalition of Shiite militias that are allied with Iran and known for attacking U.S. forces in the area.

Given the escalating tensions, the State Department has urged American citizens to leave several countries in the Middle East due to “serious security risks.” Locations flagged for departure include Bahrain, Egypt, Iran, Iraq, Israel, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Syria, the United Arab Emirates, and Yemen.

Mollah Namdar, the assistant secretary of state for consular affairs, stated earlier this month that U.S. citizens should prioritize their exit from these regions.

As hostilities persist, officials note that the overall security situation in the area continues to be precarious, and conditions might shift abruptly given ongoing conflict-related confrontations. In light of Iran’s recent retaliatory actions, numerous U.S. missions have consistently advised shelter-in-place measures or recommendations across multiple Middle Eastern nations.
