Recently, the U.S. military carried out a significant precision strike on Kharg Island in Iran, targeting key components of the country’s military infrastructure. This operation led to the destruction of facilities that stored naval mines, missiles, and various other military assets. In total, U.S. forces successfully hit over 90 military locations across Kharg Island.
Footage released shows large explosions resulting from the missile strikes, which the U.S. Central Command referred to as a “massive precision strike.” The timing and coordination of the bombing were notable, with bombs falling in quick succession.
According to reports, this operation has had a major impact, with U.S. missiles apparently decimating a significant portion of Iran’s missile inventory. President Trump commented on the strike, labeling it “the most powerful airstrike in the history of the Middle East.”
In his statements, Trump emphasized that the mission had effectively neutralized every military target within the strike zone, but chose to avoid damaging the oil infrastructure on the island—a critical consideration given Kharg Island’s role as the main terminal for Iranian oil exports.
This strike coincides with the announcement of an increase in U.S. military presence in the Middle East, including the deployment of an additional 2,500 Marines and an amphibious assault ship. Although Marine Expeditionary Units are trained for various operations such as evacuations and disaster relief, this doesn’t necessarily signal an impending ground offensive.
The specifics regarding the total number of U.S. personnel currently in the Middle East aren’t completely clear, but it’s worth noting that around 8,000 troops are typically stationed at Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar, one of the largest military bases in the region.
