Kaine and Warner stand firm against DHS funding after shooting at ODU

Following a tragic shooting linked to an ISIS-affiliated individual, Virginia’s Democratic senators are still standing firm against funding for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) unless reforms are made. Senators Mark Warner and Tim Kaine, alongside Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and their peers, have consistently opposed Republican efforts to reopen the agency, insisting on stringent reforms at Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Customs and Border Protection (CBP).

Republican senators have raised alarms about the necessity of reinstating DHS operations, especially with rising concerns over terrorist threats in the U.S. after recent events in Iran.

The FBI has officially categorized the shooting at Old Dominion University, which resulted in one death and injuries to two others, as an act of terrorism. The shooter has been identified as Mohamed Baylor Jallow, a former Army National Guardsman who had previously been convicted of supporting ISIS.

Kaine pointed out that Senate Democrats have made multiple attempts to revive aspects of the agencies via legislation aimed at defunding ICE and CBP, only to face blockages from Republicans.

“Senate Democrats have repeatedly faced obstacles in funding TSA, CISA, and the Coast Guard among other critical DHS entities, and it’s been Senate Republicans preventing this,” Kaine remarked in a statement delivered to Fox News Digital.

Warner expressed his heartbreak over the loss of Lt. Col. Brandon A. Sher and commended the responsiveness of Old Dominion University students during the incident. However, he also criticized FBI Director Kash Patel, demanding accountability on how a known terrorist sympathizer managed to access firearms and take American lives.

According to Warner, the incident underscores significant issues stemming from Patel’s leadership, which he believes has left the nation more vulnerable to potential threats.

Meanwhile, lawmakers have voiced concerns regarding ICE’s handling of Abdul Jallow, who is charged with the murder of a Virginia resident earlier this year. When asked if local authorities should collaborate with ICE to detain him, Kaine questioned whether ICE had adequately engaged with the county instead.

“ICE has apprehended him multiple times only to release him,” Kaine stated. “Certainly, the county could do more, but ICE needs to take such cases seriously as well.” Warner also described the murder incident as a tragedy, pointing out that someone with 30 arrests shouldn’t be allowed to remain in the country.
