Motörhead Guitarist Phil Campbell Passes Away at 64
Phil Campbell, the longtime guitarist of Motörhead, has died at the age of 64, as confirmed by several sources. The news was shared by the band on social media, expressing deep sorrow: “I can’t believe I’m saying this… It is with deep sadness that I must say that Philip Anthony Campbell has passed away.”
The statement from the band portrayed Campbell as a passionate musician who combined heart with talent. They described him as an incredible guitarist and performer who was known for his humor and genuine love for life.
In their tribute, the band emphasized, “Phil was an incredible guitarist, writer, performer, and musician in the vein of Motörhead. You can’t help but laugh when you’re around him, because Phil loved life and lived it with great joy.” They also requested privacy for his family as they mourn his passing, saying, “For now, please send love and positive energy to Gaynor and the boys while giving them time, space, and privacy.”
Campbell’s family also shared the news, stating, “It is with great sadness that we announce the death of our beloved father, Philip Anthony Campbell. He passed away peacefully last night after a long and brave battle.” They reflected on him being a devoted husband, father, and grandfather, known affectionately as “Bumpy.”
Born in Pontypridd, Wales, Campbell’s rise to fame began in the late 1970s with the heavy metal band Persian Risk. But things took a turn in 1984 when Lemmy Kilmister of Motörhead invited him to join the band as a replacement for Brian Robertson.
Making his debut on Motörhead’s 1986 album *Orgasmatron*, Campbell eventually became the band’s longest-serving guitarist, contributing to 16 studio albums and crafting some of the most iconic riffs in songs like “Deaf Forever,” “Eat the Rich,” and “Born to Raise Hell.” Even after Lemmy’s death in 2015 and the disbandment of Motörhead, Campbell continued to share his musical legacy.
His first solo album, *Old Lions Still Roar*, was released in 2019, and he also toured with his band, Phil Campbell and the Bastard Sons. Former Motörhead drummer Mickey Dee paid tribute on Instagram, recalling Campbell as “the funniest guy I’ve ever known and the best rock guitarist I’ve ever played with.”
Dee added a heartfelt message, expressing, “I miss spending time with the nicest man I’ve ever met… Sleep well, my friend and rock warrior.”
Campbell’s death adds to a series of losses for Motörhead fans, as guitarist “Fast Eddie” Clark passed away in 2018 at 67. Clark was a significant figure in the band, involved in creating their classic sound and recording iconic tracks like “Ace of Spades.”
