PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. — Players Championship Update

The Players Championship is poised to be decided by Ludvig Oberg. At just 26 years old, his remarkable talent has led many to anticipate his presence in high-stakes tournaments like this one.

Despite only securing two wins, the last being at the Genesis Invitational last year, a victory at TPC Sawgrass—often dubbed the “fifth major”—would elevate him significantly in the golfing world.

Oberg, after a solid second-round performance of 63 followed by a 71, enters the final round three strokes ahead. “I didn’t play great, but I’m glad I got some results,” he mentioned modestly.

He’s not hesitating to contemplate the gravity of potentially winning. “I think about winning and what it’s like… It’s a big deal,” Oberg shared, acknowledging both the excitement and pressure of the moment. “It’s going to be nerve-wracking,” he added. Playing in a familiar place, surrounded by family and friends, has its challenges but also adds to the thrill.

Michael Thorbjornsen shot an impressive 5-under 67, bringing him to 10 under and just three shots off Oberg’s lead. The two have a history; they often played together during their college years.

Thorbjornsen expressed his admiration for Oberg, saying, “He was one of the players I looked up to in college.” He acknowledged that Oberg has a strong mental game, making their final round together an exciting challenge.

Cameron Young, another strong competitor, was in the mix. After sinking a birdie to reach 11 under, he experienced a setback on the 18th hole, resulting in a double bogey that dropped him to 9 under. “Honestly, my tee shot wasn’t bad… but the wind played tricks on it,” he recounted.

Other players like Matt Fitzpatrick were also in pursuit of Oberg but faced difficulties, while Xander Schauffele struggled to maintain his form after starting strong.

Oberg’s journey in past years has included a challenging eighth-place finish in 2024 and missing out on last year’s Players spot. However, he now stands on the brink of solidifying his place among the best.

Earlier in the round, Oberg demonstrated resilience by making crucial putts, extending his lead. Yet a three-putt on the 18th dampened his progress slightly. “That was frustrating, but I’m still in a good position,” he reflected, remaining positive about his three-stroke advantage.

Historically, a five-stroke deficit is the largest that can be overcome in the final round of The Players. Young remains optimistic, suggesting that while Oberg is formidable, he believes big scores are within reach. “I don’t have high expectations, but I think those numbers are out there,” he remarked, hinting at the potential for a dramatic finish.
