Subway rider pushed onto tracks while attempting to intervene in altercation at Manhattan station

Subway Incident in Upper Manhattan

A 35-year-old man intervening in a fight at a subway station in Upper Manhattan was pushed onto the train tracks Saturday, according to police reports.

The man tried to break up a confrontation between a man and a woman at the Dickman Street station in Inwood. This led to a chaotic moment when the man involved in the altercation shoved the victim onto the downtown A Line tracks around 3:52 p.m.

Fortunately, the victim managed to escape the tracks just before the train arrived but sustained injuries to his left wrist. He was subsequently transported to Columbia Presbyterian Hospital for treatment.

So far, there have been no arrests linked to this incident.

Commuters at the station expressed concerns about safety while riding. For instance, Nikki Suresh, 33, who works in finance, noted that she no longer wears headphones in subway stations, emphasizing the need to stay alert. “Especially here, you just never know who might approach you,” she remarked, admitting that she often feels anxious on the metro.

This event occurred shortly after another incident where an illegal immigrant was accused of pushing two individuals onto subway tracks on the Upper East Side. One of them was 83-year-old Richard Williams, a veteran of the Air Force.

Byron Hernandez, who immigrated from Honduras, faces charges for allegedly pushing Williams and 30-year-old John Pena onto the tracks at the Lexington Avenue 63rd Street Station the previous Sunday.

Hernandez is described as a “serial offender” with a troubling criminal history, including at least 15 charges for serious offenses like aggravated assault. The Department of Homeland Security revealed that he had previously been deported four times but kept re-entering the country illegally.

In a dramatic turn of events, Pena managed to save Williams, pulling him back to safety moments before a train approached. Tragically, however, Williams is now reported to be brain dead, and his family holds little hope for his recovery. Pena himself sustained injuries to his shoulder and knee during the incident.
