Authorities have issued a video that captures the events leading up to the death of former NFL player Doug Martin while in police custody.
This incident occurred in October when police responded to a reported home invasion in Oakland Hills. Subsequently, body camera and surveillance footage was made public.
The footage revealed Martin, a former Raiders player, in distress, shouting and fleeing through his backyard as officers approached.
Attempts were made to apprehend him, but he was seen resisting arrest, including breaking a window while running through a neighbor’s yard.
Eventually, Martin was handcuffed inside what appeared to be a home gym, but soon lost consciousness. Paramedics arrived but were unable to revive him, and he was declared dead on the scene.
His family indicated that they had contacted emergency services because they believed he was having a mental health crisis.
Martin had a career spanning six seasons with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and one with the Oakland Raiders.
In a statement following his death, Martin’s attorney, Brian Murphy, mentioned that an investigation into the circumstances during custody is ongoing. He highlighted that Doug’s parents were actively seeking medical assistance and had reached out to local authorities.
They described a situation where Doug, feeling overwhelmed and disoriented, had fled his home at night and entered a neighbor’s house, leading to his encounter with police.
