Cadillac’s Journey in F1: Chinese Grand Prix Recap
Every step Cadillac takes in Formula 1 represents an essential moment for the team, and the recent Chinese Grand Prix was certainly no different.
In just their second race, Valtteri Bottas and Sergio Perez crossed the finish line, with Bottas taking 13th place and Perez finishing 15th.
On that particular day, some challenges faced by other teams surprisingly worked to Cadillac’s advantage. Notably, three drivers—Max Verstappen, Fernando Alonso, and Lance Stroll—failed to finish the race, while four others didn’t even start due to pre-race mechanical issues. After Bottas couldn’t finish during the season opener in Australia, completing the race in Shanghai was a significant achievement for this new team.
Post-race, team principal Graham Loudon expressed his enthusiasm: “We’re extremely happy with this result.” He mentioned that the new car designs are creating substantial problems for several more seasoned teams, making Cadillac’s accomplishment of getting both cars to the finish line in their second race particularly impressive. “Our teams in Indianapolis, Charlotte, Silverstone, and Germany should all be proud,” he added.
Loudon went on to note that there was noticeable progress in pace and performance throughout the weekend. “It’s been a tough few weeks, and I’m really grateful for everyone’s hard work. We can leave this first double-header feeling proud and confident in the foundation we’re building for the future,” he said.
Perez, who had a moment of contact with Bottas right after the race began, mentioned that the team should feel “proud” of their achievements in such a brief time frame. “It was a solid race, and bringing both cars to the finish line in just our second Grand Prix is a good indicator of our potential,” he reflected. However, he admitted that his race was challenging, partly due to the contact with Bottas, which he acknowledged was his mistake. He noted issues with energy distribution that resulted in a significant loss of time but expressed optimism about the upcoming race in Japan.
Bottas echoed the sentiment of pride shared by his teammate. “Finishing 13th and 15th was better than I expected, especially seeing how many issues the other teams faced,” he said. He highlighted that their race was comparatively trouble-free, allowing them to secure solid positions and even battle against Aston Martin. “From race one to race two, we made clear progress in every needed area. I’m really proud of this team for heading in the right direction, though we know there’s still work ahead,” Bottas added.
Cadillac and the rest of the grid are set to return in two weeks for the Japanese Grand Prix.
