Latin Grammy winner Bobby Pulido under investigation for residency in Texas election

Latin Grammy Award winner Bobby Pulido, a well-known music artist, has expressed interest in obtaining Mexican citizenship. He refers to himself as a “winter Texan,” spending a significant portion of the year south of the U.S. border, which has raised some eyebrows as he pursues a congressional seat.

“It’s really hot here, brother. Like super hot. I consider myself a summer Mexican,” Pulido remarked playfully during an interview. He reiterated his fondness for the term “winter Texan,” believing it has a nice ring to it.

However, his lighthearted comments somewhat conflict with what he shared with NBC News earlier in the month.

Pulido has been living in Texas for most of his life, although he admitted, “Since COVID-19, that’s actually not the whole truth.” This was in response to the criticism suggesting he rarely stays in the district he’s campaigning for.

Known for his hits like “Des Verado” and “Se Murio de Amor,” Pulido has been nominated for five Latin Grammy Awards and won the Best Tejano Album in both 2022 and 2025. He has frequently traveled to Mexico for his concerts and previously mentioned to a local paper that he was contemplating dual citizenship.

“I want to have the same Mexican passport you have,” he stated in an interview with a Mexican outlet.

His recent performances have predominantly taken place in Mexico. Following his announcement to run for Congress in a highly competitive district, he faced scrutiny over his online behavior, notably sharing links to explicit content on social media.

Adding to the backlash were some derogatory comments he made about Trump in the past, including using vulgar language in his posts.

Pulido recently secured the Democratic nomination for Texas’ 15th Congressional District, currently represented by Republican Rep. Monica de la Cruz, who has challenged his commitment to the community by poking fun at his connection with quinceañera celebrations, typically held for girls turning 15.

In a cheeky reply, Pulido invited himself to a local quinceañera party that attracted nearly 1,000 attendees, as per his campaign’s report.

Moreover, Pulido’s connection to Mexico is quite personal. His wife and children from a previous marriage live there, and he owns property south of the border. He indicated plans to seek medical treatment in Mexico in 2025.

“We live on the border. My wife and I have a home in Mexico, so we frequently visit. It offers me a unique perspective on healthcare comparisons between the two countries,” Pulido explained.

His campaign clarified that Pulido currently holds only American citizenship. According to a spokesperson, “Bobby is proud to be an American citizen. There’s nothing wrong with maintaining ties to family and heritage across borders.”
