Trump Considers Action Against Iran’s Oil Export Hub

President Donald Trump announced on Sunday that the U.S. has plans in place to target Iran’s oil export hub, Kharg Island, but has opted not to proceed with an attack at this time.

While speaking to reporters on Air Force One, Trump described Kharg Island as Iran’s “crown jewel.” He noted that only the segment responsible for the oil pipeline remains intact, referencing previous U.S. military actions there.

“You can do it with five minutes’ notice, and it’s all locked and loaded and ready to go if you want to do it,” he stated. “We chose not to do it. We chose not to do it again. We’ll see what happens.”

According to Trump, this show of force is intended to pressure Iran into negotiations, suggesting that the country wishes to “seriously negotiate” but isn’t prepared to meet U.S. demands.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi responded, declaring that his nation is not looking for a ceasefire or negotiations amid the ongoing conflict. “We are ready to defend ourselves for as long as necessary,” he stated, asserting that Iran will continue to resist until the U.S. acknowledges the war as unwinnable.

U.S. Central Command recently conducted a large-scale precision strike on Kharg Island as part of Operation Epic Fury, targeting over 90 military sites while leaving the island’s oil infrastructure unharmed. Reports suggest that the U.S. is contemplating seizing full control of Kharg, which could significantly impact Iran’s oil revenue.

However, such an action would necessitate deploying U.S. troops and might provoke Iranian retaliation against oil facilities in the region, especially in Saudi Arabia. As one U.S. official noted, “There are big risks and big rewards.”

The unfolding situation adds complexity to Trump’s economic agenda, particularly as vital midterm elections draw near.
