Sean Penn Wins Third Oscar
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Sean Penn has had a highly celebrated acting career, recently adding yet another Oscar to his collection.
Penn won on Sunday, earning the Best Supporting Actor Award for his role in Paul Thomas Anderson’s political drama titled “The Battle Continues One After Another.” He portrays a seasoned power broker, navigating complex loyalties and ideologies central to the film’s narrative.
Interestingly, Penn, now 65, didn’t attend the Oscar ceremony this time around.
After the announcement of his win, Kieran Culkin commented, “He couldn’t be here tonight, or he didn’t want to be here tonight.” This isn’t the first time Penn has skipped the Oscars; he has missed the event three times in the past when nominated for “Dead Man Walking” in 1996, “Sweet and Lowdown” in 2000, and “I Am Sam” in 2002.
In 2022, he made headlines by presenting one of his Oscars to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy.
This year, Penn also opted out of the BAFTAs and Actor’s Awards.
In “The Battle Continues One After Another,” Penn plays Colonel Stephen J. Lockjaw, a strategic figure whose long experience in political campaigns has both shaped his influence and left lasting scars. His character embodies the burdens of past victories and setbacks, giving him valuable insights while tactically maneuvering behind the scenes. This role highlights Penn’s ability to balance intensity with restraint, distinguishing him in a strong ensemble cast.
This win marks Penn’s third Academy Award.
Previously, he was present at the Oscars when he won Best Actor for his roles in “Mystic River” and “Milk,” both of which shed light on important social issues.
Penn first caught the public’s eye in the 1980s with “Fast Times at Ridgemont High” but quickly became known as one of the most fearless dramatic actors in Hollywood. Over his career, he has delivered powerful performances in films like “Dead Man Walking,” “Carlito’s Way,” “The Thin Red Line,” and “I Am Sam.”
His latest performance in “One Battle After Another” adds yet another significant achievement to his already impressive resume.
Other nominees for the award included Delroy Lindo, Benicio Del Toro, Jacob Elordi, and Stellan Skarsgard.
