Concerns Raised Over Illegal Immigrant’s Release in Fairfax County

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has requested that Virginia’s Governor Abigail Spanberger and officials from Fairfax County refrain from releasing an undocumented immigrant accused of multiple assaults on high school girls.

Nineteen-year-old Israel Flores Ortiz faces nine charges of assault and battery, linked to alleged incidents where he groped a female student and other girls at the school. According to accounts from the victims and their parents, Ortiz reportedly approached around a dozen girls from behind in crowded hallways, making them uncomfortable with inappropriate physical contact.

Parents reported that these incidents unfolded throughout the school year, while Ortiz is currently in the 11th grade at the high school, as detailed by local news.

Having entered the U.S. illegally in 2024, Ortiz was released under the Biden administration, as per DHS.

Ortiz is currently detained without bail at the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center, managed by Sheriff Stacey Kincaid. However, Fairfax County’s Sheriff’s Office has a policy not to enforce ICE requests unless accompanied by a legal order.

Governor Spanberger has also reversed a previous mandate for local cooperation with ICE, arguing that this separation of duties can create mistrust in communities, making law enforcement’s job more challenging. She emphasized that state law enforcement should focus on public safety and criminal investigations rather than immigration status enforcement.

DHS Deputy Assistant Secretary Lauren Biss criticized Spanberger’s decision, asserting that it puts community safety at risk. She expressed concern that Ortiz had no business attending school given his criminal background.

A spokesperson for the Fairfax County Sheriff’s Office confirmed Ortiz’s custody and indicated that ICE has been informed of his presence there. If a release order were to be issued, ICE would take appropriate actions to detain him.

Stephanie Lundquist Arora, a parent of three students in the Fairfax County system, commented that the situation reflects a larger issue within immigration policy, which she feels prioritizes adult illegal immigrants over the safety of children in schools. She also pointed out that school officials delayed notifying parents about the incidents, only doing so after public pressure.

The school system responded by reiterating its focus on student safety and promising thorough investigations into any incidents reported. They expressed gratitude for collaboration with law enforcement in addressing safety concerns.

Requests for comments from Spanberger’s office and the Fairfax County Sheriff’s Office went unanswered.
