Recent comments by former officials from the Biden and Obama administrations have stirred up some tension. They’ve hinted at potential political consequences for companies should the Democrats regain power in Congress and the White House. This sparked criticism from Sen. John Kennedy (R-Louisiana), who condemned such plans for retribution and argued that neither party should use government authority to intimidate opponents.

Kennedy referred to remarks by Susan Rice, who previously led Biden’s domestic policy committee. On a podcast last month, she indicated that companies supporting President Trump’s agenda might face repercussions from Democrats in the future. “What Rice is talking about is quid pro quo,” Kennedy said.

In her podcast interview, Rice claimed that Democrats would not forget the actions of those who opposed Trump. She mentioned various entities, including law firms and media companies, stating that they would be held accountable.

Kennedy expressed concern over Rice’s comments, suggesting they signify a troubling trend where it seems permissible to use legal systems against political rivals. “What Ms. Rice is trying to say is that in America today, it’s OK to use the law to prosecute and harass political opponents,” he reflected.

He noted that the trend of using political retribution dates back to recent years, particularly during the Biden administration. He highlighted the investigation launched by then-Attorney General Merrick Garland into Trump during the previous election cycle, suggesting that it set a precedent both parties might regret. “They’re unleashing a spirit that they can’t control,” he added.

Kennedy maintained that, while he focused on comments from Democrats, Trump has also faced criticism for weaponizing government resources against his adversaries. He emphasized his disapproval of continued political retaliation on either side, stating that “two wrongs don’t make a right.” While acknowledging the issues under the current administration, he believes the same mistakes shouldn’t perpetuate.
