Eagles We’re Dealing with AJ Brown’s Trade Situation
The Philadelphia Eagles find themselves in a tricky spot with wide receiver AJ Brown. Because of his hefty salary, they can’t really trade him right now; they’ll have to wait until June 1st to pull off any deal that involves two seasons’ worth of his salary cap. Unfortunately, this waiting game has severely diminished his previously solid trade value. There’s a real chance the Eagles might end up keeping him or accepting a much lower offer than they initially thought would be on the table.
Brown is back on the radar, especially after the Miami Dolphins shook things up by trading Jaylen Waddle and a fourth-round pick to the Broncos in exchange for a first, third, and fourth-round pick. That’s a rather disappointing return for a 27-year-old who can rack up 1,000 yards, and it really highlights the Dolphins’ poor management decisions.
This development might mean that Brown needs to reevaluate what he could actually fetch in the trade market. Fans in Philadelphia are still holding out hope that this could somehow pave the way for a trade involving both Brown and Maxx Crosby. It sounds like a nice dream, but honestly, there’s no sign that the Raiders are looking to part ways with Crosby again. Even if they do, would Brown really be enough to sweeten the deal? The value of different positions plays a big role here. Top pass rushers are generally held in much higher regard than premier wide receivers.
There’s an NFL saying that the value of a trade pick decreases post-draft. So, for instance, a player who’s a first-round pick in March could drop to a second-round pick in June. The only players who really defy this trend are those seen as elite in their positions, or those with immense positional value. So, if the Eagles can manage to trade Brown, perhaps they’d be looking at a second-round pick, at best.
Moreover, it seems the general consensus in the league is that the Eagles are keen to move on from AJ Brown. Fans remember the sideline incident between him and head coach Nick Sirianni. Plus, with an already crowded receiver lineup, it seems the Eagles don’t necessarily need someone like Brown right now.
Eagles fans might need to lower their expectations regarding an AJ Brown trade, especially with recent events in the league. Reports say that the Jaguars weren’t able to secure an adequate offer for Brian Thomas Jr., and Michael Pittman Jr. was traded for next to nothing, while Jaylen Waddle is still on an affordable contract. The market for receivers isn’t what it used to be, particularly as the league seems to be shifting toward a more run-oriented approach. Paradoxically, this shift has been aided by the success of Saquon Barkley with the Eagles.
It would really be something to see AJ Brown fetch anything more than a second-round pick given these circumstances.
