Security Team Member for Texas Representative Shot in Dallas
A member of Representative Jasmine Crockett’s security detail was fatally shot by Dallas police on Wednesday. The individual, who had been operating under a false identity, went by the name “Mike King.” Crockett confirmed the shocking news via a statement on X.
“Dallas Police have confirmed the death of a member of our security team,” she said. “We are saddened and shocked by some concerning revelations.”
In her statement, Crockett expressed her belief in redemption, mentioning the respect and care this individual had shown while serving on her team. “As a former public defender, I’ve always believed people are more than the worst thing they’ve ever done,” she wrote.
The Dallas Police Department later identified the man as Diamon-Maziarre Robinson, a 39-year-old with a criminal history that included multiple arrests. On the day of the incident, police were responding to a vehicle bulletin involving a stolen U.S. government license plate, which led them to find Robinson in a white Mercedes.
Attempts to negotiate with him lasted over an hour before SWAT arrived. The situation escalated when Robinson exited the vehicle and brandished a handgun, prompting officers to open fire. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigations revealed that Robinson had used a stolen identity to run fraudulent security firms and was wanted for several felonies at the time of the shooting. Dallas Deputy Chief William Griffith noted that the “Special Dignitary Police” Robinson claimed to work for did not exist.
Ultimately, the police revealed that Robinson had a stolen handgun, and more firearms were discovered connected to him. Crockett stated that her team had followed all protocols for hiring security and hadn’t found any violent offenses in his background at that time.
“Mike had been around our team for years. There was no reason to suspect he wasn’t who he claimed to be,” Crockett explained. She emphasized that this situation highlighted significant gaps in the vetting process for those providing security for Congress members. “What we’re learning about his past doesn’t fit the person we came to know as Mike King.”
Crockett ended her statement reflecting on the tragedy, wishing it could have been avoided, while also echoing her belief in the potential for human beings to change.
