Be Cautious with Biblical Interpretations from AI

Misinterpretations of the Bible have existed throughout history. Take the instance when Jesus was tempted in the wilderness; the devil twisted God’s words, showing how easy it is to take things out of context.

While we may not hear Satan speaking to us today, the caution remains. We should be wary of those who misrepresent the Word of God, and this includes the advice we get from modern technologies like AI.

Bobby Gruenewald, the CEO and founder of YouVersion, highlights a real concern here. People frequently turn to their devices for answers, but this reliance can be risky, especially regarding theological questions about God. Gruenewald emphasizes that while AI is intelligent, accuracy is crucial when it comes to interpreting sacred texts.

YouVersion, which provides access to the Bible in numerous languages, demonstrates the significance of Scripture daily. However, as AI becomes more involved in delivering religious insights, errors can arise. Gruenewald noted that advanced AI models misquote the Bible at least 15% of the time, with some instances rising as high as 60%.

These mistakes can stem from grammatical adjustments or word changes, and every alteration in Scripture is significant. Gruenewald reminds those in ministry that as AI technology evolves, faith-based organizations must safeguard their practices. The influence of AI is growing, but prioritizing accuracy is essential.

“In our quest to answer profound questions and provide guidance from God’s Word, we must strive for fidelity to what it says,” he urged.
