Tim Scott Changes His Mind, Announces He Will Seek a Third Term

Tim Scott Announces Third Senate Run

Senator Tim Scott from South Carolina revealed in an interview with the Post and Courier that he has changed his mind and will seek re-election for a third term in 2028.

Initially, Scott had stated in both 2014 and 2019 that he would only serve two complete terms in the Senate. However, he confirmed his intention to campaign for another six years during the recent interview with the outlet.

“When I think about my own re-election in 2028, I think of all the lessons I’ve learned from campaigning for other candidates, and even from my experiences here in South Carolina,” Scott shared. He also mentioned that as he travels more, he understands the significant role South Carolina plays in the wider political landscape.

A spokesperson for Scott later confirmed that he aims to pursue a third term, with an official announcement expected to come later.

Back in 2014, Scott had indicated support for term limits, aiming to restrict himself to two terms. During a 2019 appearance on the Post and Courier’s “Pints and Politics,” he reaffirmed that 2022 would be his last election. “I’m going to run for re-election, but if I do, it will be my last election,” he had declared at that time.

Currently, he holds a 52% approval rating among registered voters in South Carolina, according to a Winthrop University Poll conducted until November 2025.

In addition to his Senate campaign, Scott is also running for president in 2024. After suspending his presidential campaign in November 2023, he endorsed President Donald Trump ahead of the New Hampshire primary in January 2024.
