Earlier this week, two police officers in Florida apprehended a man who tried to escape on a paddleboard.
The suspect, identified as 28-year-old Chase Cruz, was being questioned by the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office and Daytona Beach Shores Police after attempting to flee on foot. This incident happened on March 16.
Body camera footage captures the moment Cruz starts running away as officers remind him of his rights.
In a dramatic turn of events, Cruz jumped into the Halifax River, forcing the officers to wade into the water to catch him.
A video shared by the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office on social media shows two officers paddling out to intercept Cruz, who was floating in the river still wearing the blue hoodie he had on while speaking to the police.
One officer went into the water to help attach Cruz to a flotation device, while two others pulled him onto a paddleboard. They ultimately brought him back to shore, where he was taken into custody.
Cruz is facing charges for resisting arrest and loitering, according to authorities.
The Volusia County Sheriff’s Office has yet to react to inquiries about the incident.
