Sen. Rand Paul Critiques DHS Nominee Markwayne Mullin

On Wednesday, Senator Rand Paul (R-Ky.) expressed strong criticism towards President Trump’s nominee for the Department of Homeland Security, Senator Markwayne Mullin (R-Okla.), accusing him of justifying violence.

Paul highlighted an incident from 2017 where he was assaulted by a neighbor, resulting in six broken ribs and lung damage. He said, “If I want violence against his family, that would be unacceptable. If he can justify the violence that happened to me, then I don’t think he’s fit for this role.”

This exchange occurred during a tense nomination hearing for Mullin, who is set to replace Kristi Noem as DHS secretary. The atmosphere became particularly heated between two Republican senators at the session.

During the hearing, Paul challenged Mullin directly, asking him to defend his views on the violence that Paul experienced.

Mullin responded vaguely, suggesting that he understood the actions of Paul’s neighbor. Paul later described the aftermath of his injuries, saying he had a severe infection, which he referenced as excruciating. He asserted, “Anyone who finds that admirable isn’t the right person to lead law enforcement.”

Paul accused Mullin of having an unusual fixation on justifying violence, a sentiment he believes disqualifies him from overseeing Homeland Security. He expressed concerns about the dangerous mindset some of his Republican colleagues possess in such significant roles.

Paul noted, “‘Men will settle their differences by punching you in the mouth,’ those are his words,” emphasizing Mullin’s unwillingness to renounce or amend his comments about violence.

Senate Majority Leader John Thune, however, endorsed Mullin’s qualifications for the position, despite acknowledging his “personal history.”

While Paul expects Mullin will secure the necessary votes for the DHS role, he commented, “He may have had a chance to apologize, but he’s had several opportunities.” The exchange marks another chapter in ongoing tensions surrounding Mullin’s nomination.

Mullin’s office has not yet responded to requests for comment.
