THROW AWAY THE KEY
Texas Judge Raquel West had a strong response to a recent case.
Surveillance footage showed 18-year-old Caden James Fontenette and two accomplices intimidating a convenience store clerk for an extended period. The trio physically assaulted the clerk and displayed what seemed to be semi-automatic rifles, effectively robbing the store.
Fontenette pleaded guilty to aggravated assault. Despite it being his first felony and the defense requesting probation, Judge West expressed her disapproval during sentencing.
“Years ago, there wasn’t much debate on these matters. Prosecutors often suggested probation for youthful offenders to provide opportunities,” she began.
“But things have shifted dramatically with young people engaging in alarming behavior like what I witnessed today. I can only imagine the terror that clerk felt, just trying to earn a living.”
West pointed out that while Fontenette awaited sentencing, he was involved in multiple altercations in jail.
“It seems you enjoy fighting, which has been reflected in your behavior behind bars. You can’t even adhere to jail rules,” she remarked, noting that officials deemed him a “high risk.”
“Unfortunately, I don’t believe you’d succeed if I set you on probation. We’re looking for solutions to this issue,” West stated. As a result, she sentenced him to 25 years in prison, eligible for parole in 12.5 years.
Fontenette’s family reacted strongly in the courtroom, causing a commotion among bailiffs. It figures.
Judge West’s decision appears to be a necessary one, potentially preventing Fontenette from victimizing more innocent people—at least for now.
While it’s reassuring that Fontenette, along with his tattoos, will be incarcerated for a significant period, it’s also crucial that West has drawn attention to the issues surrounding leniency in the judicial system, which has often adversely affected law-abiding citizens.
Folks, as West noted, simply want to work, earn a living, and return home—but many instead become victims, often at the hands of repeat offenders granted leniency in their previous court appearances.
This time, Judge West focused on the well-being of the traumatized clerk and the safety of the community. And if that means locking away violent individuals and restricting their freedom, so be it.
Interesting idea, right?
