During a visit to Auburn Hills, Michigan, Vice President J.D. Vance had an unexpectedly candid exchange with reporter Craig Mauger from the Detroit News. Mauger posed a question about President Donald Trump’s remarks on potentially taking federal control of elections to ensure voter integrity.
“Given the concerns and discussions regarding election administration in Michigan as we approach this crucial midterm election, can you assure the public that the federal government won’t intervene?” Mauger asked.
In a light-hearted manner, Vance responded, noting it was the first he’d heard of any plans for federal interference and joking about not sending Secretary of State Marco Rubio to Michigan to supervise vote counting.
“If you’re suggesting that we require voter IDs for everyone, then that’s something to support,” Vance asserted, eliciting applause and chants of “USA” from the crowd.
He kept the discussion light, reiterating he hadn’t spoken to the President or Rubio, but acknowledged the presence of intimidation tactics. “I honestly don’t think we’ll see that,” he specified.
Vance emphasized that if Americans are considered the sovereign people, their votes must be protected, adding that it’s essential to prevent fraud in elections.
Mauger’s questions seemed to echo Trump’s past remarks, where he called for “federal involvement” in elections, suggesting the government should send agents to various cities, including Detroit. Trump mentioned that federal agencies should oversee elections, pointing to the inadequacies in some states.
The interaction, now gaining traction on social media, has been viewed hundreds of thousands of times.
