OTTAWA, ON — The Islanders confirmed plans that had been anticipated since last fall: they will relocate their AHL affiliate from Bridgeport, Connecticut, to Hamilton, Ontario, starting with the 2026-27 season.
This announcement was made alongside Oakview Group, which runs TD Coliseum, the arena in Hamilton where the team is set to play next season.
However, this move still needs the stamp of approval from the AHL Board of Directors.
“We’re thrilled to announce Hamilton as a key affiliate of the American Hockey League,” said general manager Mathieu Darche. He noted that the support from the city during this transition has been remarkable. “Our top young players will now have the chance to play in front of an enthusiastic fan base at the upgraded TD Coliseum. We’re eager to establish our presence in the area and draw in a new generation of hockey aficionados.”
The Islanders have faced challenges attracting fans at Total Mortgage Arena in Bridgeport, which has served as their AHL base for 25 years.
The future of that venue remains somewhat uncertain, but the team expressed its commitment to collaborate with Bridgeport to ensure a smooth transition at Total Mortgage Arena.
“On behalf of the entire New York Islanders organization, I want to extend our heartfelt thanks to the City of Bridgeport and our loyal fans who have supported us for the last 25 years,” commented Kelly Cheeseman, President of Business Operations. “From our early days as the Sound Tigers to our current identity as the Bridgeport Islanders, this community has been integral to our AHL journey. We truly appreciate the memories and passion our Connecticut fans have shared with us.”
TD Coliseum, located just 45 minutes from Toronto, recently completed a $300 million renovation and can host 18,000 fans.
While moving from Bridgeport might be less convenient—it’s within driving distance to Long Island—it seems the presence of many daily nonstop flights from Toronto to New York should alleviate any concerns about travel logistics.
The Islanders will reveal information regarding the team name, logo, and ticket sales in Hamilton later on.
“Hamilton is thrilled to welcome an AHL team,” said Hamilton Mayor Andrea Horwath. “This is a significant moment for our residents and a big leap in the ongoing revitalization of our downtown. Bringing professional hockey back to TD Coliseum will foster family gatherings and boost support for local businesses. It not only honors our city’s proud hockey legacy but also opens doors for young players and fans to engage with the sport.”
