Incident at Newark Liberty International Airport Under Investigation
Federal authorities are looking into a recent incident involving a commercial jet and a cargo plane at Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey. This occurred on Tuesday night and has been labeled as a “close call.”
Officials from the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) have confirmed that an Alaska Airlines Boeing 737 was in the vicinity of a FedEx Boeing 777, leading both aircraft to cross the runway as they attempted to land.
According to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), around 8:15 p.m. local time, air traffic controllers instructed Alaska Airlines Flight 294 to perform a “go-around” as FedEx Flight 721 was cleared to land on the intersecting runway.
A spokesperson for FedEx stated that their flight landed safely without any issues, following the air traffic control instructions. “The crew of FedEx Flight 721 managed to land without incident,” the spokesperson said.
An Alaska Airlines representative also mentioned that their flight had been cleared to land but had to follow the directive for a go-around. “Our pilots are well-trained,” they remarked, adding that they were aware of the ongoing investigation by the FAA and NTSB.
This event comes just a year after a tragic mid-air collision involving an Army Black Hawk helicopter and an American Airlines passenger plane near Ronald Reagan Washington International Airport, which resulted in the loss of 67 lives.
Newark Liberty International Airport, one of the busiest airports in the U.S., witnesses tens of millions of passengers each year. It has recently been dealing with a shortage of air traffic controllers, which has affected operations and led to notable delays.
The FAA and NTSB are currently conducting their investigations into this latest incident.
