WBC final reaches record ratings with a 128 percent increase from 2023

Record Viewership for World Baseball Classic Championship Game

This year’s World Baseball Classic Championship Game attracted more viewers than ever before. The exciting final match between Team USA and Venezuela on Tuesday reached 10.784 million viewers across FOX and FOX Deportes, setting a new record for the tournament. A representative from Fox Sports shared the numbers on Thursday.

That’s a staggering 128 percent increase from the previous championship match in 2023, which only brought in 4.48 million viewers.

Before the final took the spotlight, the semifinal game on Sunday, featuring Team USA against the Dominican Republic, was already making waves with 7,369,000 viewers. This match was, at that time, the most-watched in the tournament’s history until the final surpassed it just two days later.

On the whole, the average viewership for the 2026 WBC hit 1.294 million across FOX’s three channels, making it the most viewed event on the English-language network since its launch in 2006.

The overwhelming success this year has set tongues wagging about the possibility of relocating the tournament to the middle of the MLB season. Commissioner Rob Manfred hinted this might even be on the table.

He mentioned, “Obviously, we have a commitment with Fox for a mid-season All-Star Game through 2028. We’ve been discussing midseason tournaments as the game keeps evolving.”

He noted that if there’s momentum for considering a midseason tournament, this could be the perfect chance.

Manfred also emphasized how the WBC contributes to growing international competition.

He stated, “The WBC is kind of the springboard for the rest of our international efforts. It lays the groundwork for building long-term relationships with sponsors, broadcasters, and various partners.”

Additionally, he mentioned that baseball’s inclusion in the 2028 Olympics might influence when the next WBC takes place. He expressed optimism regarding MLB’s participation in the Summer Olympics.

There’s some uncertainty—he asked, “Should we do it in ’29, or ’30, or perhaps sooner? We’re receiving plenty of emails urging us not to wait another four years.” He suggested a three- or four-year cycle might be suitable for the event, noting that timing will play a big role in shaping future international efforts.

Finally, he added, “I remain hopeful about the Olympics, and if we go, we’ll need to consider the short time frame from July 2028 to spring 2029. It’s not an easy call, but we definitely need to weigh that in our planning.”
