Summer Nights at Dodger Stadium

There’s something special about a warm summer evening at Dodger Stadium.

The sun dips low behind the San Gabriel Mountains, casting a sky painted with vibrant hues of pink, orange, and blue. It almost feels like a scene crafted just for Dodgers fans.

As the aromas of hot dogs, popcorn, and garlic fries fill the air, I can’t help but feel a rush of nostalgia. I’d guess if you’re like many fans, by the time the first pitch is over and the seventh-inning stretch rolls around, any effort to eat mindfully is long gone.

Recent research indicates that Dodgers fans aren’t just spectators; they’re truly indulging in the experience.

On average, these fans burn about 1,140 extra calories at each game, which is among the highest in Major League Baseball. To put that in perspective, that’s roughly equal to two Dodger dogs, a basket of garlic fries, and a couple of beers.

And it seems fans do this quite frequently.

Those surveyed mentioned they typically watch around three and a half games weekly. This seems to be more of a regular ritual rather than just an occasional treat. Interestingly, many fans claim they burn more calories when at Chavez Ravine compared to being at home or at a bar.

Over the span of a 162-game season, this caloric intake could potentially translate to a weight gain of about 29.2 pounds. And when October arrives with all the nail-biting games, that figure might just tip over 30 pounds.

In Los Angeles, baseball feels like more than just a pastime; it’s a total experience.

On average, Major League fans consume an additional 753 calories per game. Yet Dodgers fans seem to live life just a bit louder. Only fans of the Rangers, who burn about 1,265 calories each game, outpace them, possibly because everything in Texas is, well, bigger—including their appetites.

In California, Padres fans aren’t too far behind, consuming around 1,015 extra calories. They watch over 4 games each week, which could also lead to significant weight gain over the season.

Dodgers fans, however, sometimes seem to embrace a more indulgent lifestyle.

Meanwhile, Angels fans, perhaps feeling weary of their team’s long playoff drought, reported adding a modest 340 calories per game and watching the fewest games each week at 2.6.

Fans of the Giants find themselves in the middle, burning an extra 843 calories on game days, which, while admirable, still doesn’t surpass the league average.

But for Dodgers fans, it’s all about enjoyment.

Being a fan means celebrating moments with Dodger dogs and Micheladas surrounded by supportive fans. So what if that adds 1,000 extra calories to your day?

That’s perfectly okay.
