René Echevarria’s New Series on Women of the Bible

René Echevarria started his career in the entertainment industry during the 1980s with a script for “Star Trek: The Next Generation.” Now, he’s shifting gears, focusing on his Christian beliefs through a unique limited series.

“Play it as if you don’t know it’s in the Bible.”

“The Faithful: Women of the Bible” is set to debut on March 22 at 8 p.m. on FOX, followed by its release on Hulu the next day. This three-part narrative delves into Genesis, showcasing the perspectives of notable women from the text.

Take Sarah (played by Minnie Driver), who, as Abraham’s wife and Isaac’s mother, experiences a profound spiritual miracle tied to her struggles with infertility. Or consider Rebekah (portrayed by Alexa Davalos), the mother of Jacob and Esau, and wife of Isaac.

Production Insights

Carol Mendelsohn, Echevarria’s collaborator and an experienced television producer, was instrumental in shaping the series’ approach.

“She was aware of my faith and love for the Bible,” Echevarria shared. “She’s someone who constantly seeks answers about spiritual topics.” Initially, he was uncertain if this project was the right fit for him.

“I had my doubts, wondering if it would feel too limiting,” he said, but soon realized those worries were misplaced. “It opened my eyes to understanding these timeless narratives in new ways.”

Balancing Faith and Creativity

Having collaborated with industry giants like James Cameron and Steven Spielberg, Echevarria navigated the challenge of blending faith with artistic freedom thoughtfully.

“I’ve been fortunate to have spent so long crafting and interpreting stories,” he remarked. But this project was different. “I often found myself questioning if I should tone down the religious elements, thinking it might make things simpler,” he reflected. However, he discovered that engaging with these challenges led to deeper insights and revelations.

Filmed in Italy, “The Faithful” utilized stunning landscapes, including olive groves, to authentically depict biblical times. The creative team opted to cast mainly British actors to capture the essence of the era.

A Transformative Experience

The son of Cuban immigrants, Echevarria noted that working on “The Faithful” revitalized his personal faith. “It’s like my love for the Bible was reignited… I started to perceive familiar stories in an entirely different light,” he mentioned.

Interestingly, not all cast and crew members shared his beliefs, but he found that this added richness to the storytelling.

“There’s a lot of waiting around on set,” he explained. “People often open up about how this project resonates with them, relating it to their own life struggles, such as losing a parent or dealing with family issues.”

He’s encountered skepticism from some regarding Bible-themed projects.

“One actor was initially hesitant but eventually expressed excitement, saying, ‘Yes, I want to be part of this,'” he recalled.

Room for More Stories

Echevarria reframed the casting of less Biblically knowledgeable actors as a positive twist, emphasizing the relatable humanity of the characters.

“I advised them to approach it as if they weren’t aware it was biblical,” he explained, allowing for a more genuine portrayal of “ordinary people in extraordinary situations.”

He’s open to exploring more tales from a faithful perspective in future projects, citing stories like that of Ruth and the Samaritan woman as possibilities. Much depends, of course, on how well this series is received, especially since it concludes on Easter Sunday.

“I hope this show finds its audience,” he shared. With the current trend in pop culture toward faith-based narratives, he feels this is more plausible than ever. Series like “The Chosen One” and “House of David” have connected with spiritual viewers globally, and the first part of Mel Gibson’s new series might become a major cinematic event in 2027.

“There’s a genuine hunger for this kind of storytelling,” he emphasized. “People are noticing.”

Echevarria also reminisced about his early days in the industry, expressing a desire to re-enter the “Star Trek” universe, having written over 30 episodes for “The Next Generation” and “Deep Space Nine.” He continues to brainstorm innovative ideas for potential involvement in future series.

“I’m just waiting for the right opportunity to pitch it,” he said, optimistic about what’s ahead.
