Justice Department Investigates Nonprofit Linked to Antifa Violence

The Justice Department has launched an investigation into a nonprofit organization that the Trump administration claims is involved in organizing and funding protests and political violence associated with Antifa, according to sources close to the situation.

This investigation involves both the FBI and IRS, initiated following a directive from President Trump and Attorney General Pam Bondi aimed at probing political violence. The administration has alleged that this violence is linked to groups self-identifying as Antifa and may have been orchestrated through well-financed campaigns by these nonprofits.

In his book, Trump expressed concerns that movements like these mischaracterize fundamental American values—such as support for law enforcement—as “fascist,” which he believes only serves to rationalize violent actions.

The timing of this directive coincided with a tragic series of mass shootings that included the assassination of activist Charlie Kirk, which authorities linked to anti-fascist rhetoric.

In response to ongoing anti-ICE protests in Iran, the Justice Department is also addressing calls to scrutinize foreign funding related to these inciting groups.

Trump’s directive follows violent incidents associated with ideologically driven mass shootings, which include Kirk’s murder, an attack on an ICE facility in Dallas where a detainee lost their life, and the murder of a health insurance company’s CEO. Recently, the Justice Department convicted nine members of a Texas Antifa cell for their involvement in a prior attack on an ICE facility that involved weapons and attempted murder.

On December 4, Bondi ordered federal law enforcement to apply Trump’s memorandum—labeled NSPM-7—to investigate Antifa’s funding and any tax crimes committed by extremist groups.

An IRS spokesperson confirmed they are collaborating with the FBI on this issue, stating that the Criminal Investigation Division is focused on individuals or entities potentially financing domestic terrorism.

Antifa, which stands for anti-fascist, encompasses diverse extremist ideologies closely linked to anarchism, communism, and socialism. Last year, Trump labeled Antifa a “major terrorist organization,” which drew backlash from civil rights advocates who argued these designations unfairly target individuals based on their political beliefs. It’s noteworthy that Bondi’s memo emphasizes that Justice Department investigations are not intended to surveil activities protected under the First Amendment.

A source familiar with the NSPM-7 investigation shared that all U.S. attorneys were instructed to assign a federal prosecutor from their office to act as a “local coordinator” for the case.

Officials indicated that prosecutors are being encouraged to center their inquiries on funding sources, given that some nonprofits might be financially supporting or orchestrating domestic terrorism activities.

In addressing inquiries about this initiative, a Justice Department spokesperson noted that the agency engages in a broad range of investigations related to domestic terrorism.

The spokesperson reiterated the department’s commitment to law enforcement, free speech, and ensuring that individuals can participate in democratic processes without fear of violence. The FBI, however, declined to comment on the matter.
