Russian Attack in Zaporizhzhia Leaves Two Dead as Ukraine Pursues Peace Negotiations

Russian Drone Attack in Zaporizhzhia Claims Lives

KYIV, Ukraine – Ukrainian officials report that a Russian drone attack in Zaporizhzhia resulted in the deaths of at least two people. This incident occurred just ahead of anticipated discussions between U.S. and Ukrainian officials.

Ivan Fedorov, who leads the Zaporizhzhya region, stated that a private home was hit by the drone on Saturday morning, leading to the tragic deaths of a man and a woman, with two children also injured.

The assault took place right before expected talks, which Ukrainian state media indicated were set to happen in Miami later that day.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy shared late Thursday that he dispatched an official delegation to the U.S. to push forward stalled negotiations aimed at addressing Russian aggression.

While conflicts in Iran are drawing global attention, discussions involving Russia remain at a standstill, with no significant advancements on key issues.

As of now, the White House has not permitted a meeting with the Ukrainian representatives.

President Zelensky emphasized that the primary goal for the United States is to restart trilateral talks while ensuring other NATO allies can continue to acquire weapons from the U.S. for Ukraine’s defense.

A senior official from the Kremlin suggested on Friday that new negotiations between Moscow and Kyiv, facilitated by the U.S., might be on the horizon.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov remarked that the current suspension of talks is only temporary, expressing hope for a revival of the trilateral framework soon.

Over the past year, Western officials have often accused Russian President Vladimir Putin of delaying negotiations, all while he attempts to consolidate military control and expand his territory in Ukraine, which currently sees Russian forces occupying nearly 20% of the country.

The recent Middle Eastern conflict, starting around February 28 with the U.S. and Israel targeting Iran, has shifted some international focus away from the situation in Ukraine.

Meanwhile, Russia appears to be benefiting financially from a temporary exemption from U.S. oil sanctions, while Ukraine faces a dire financial situation and continues to await a promised €90 billion ($103 billion) loan from the European Union.
