Hubert Davis Faces Uncertain Future After NCAA Tournament Loss
Hubert Davis entered the NCAA Tournament with high hopes but saw his team squander a 19-point lead, ultimately losing the game—and potentially his job.
The future for Davis at the University of North Carolina appears shakier than ever. Reports suggest that his team, after a tough second half, was eliminated by No. 11 VCU in the first round. This defeat seems to have dashed any dreams of clinching a national championship.
Following the loss, there were claims that Davis was out of touch with his coaching staff from Friday morning until the scheduled meeting on Saturday.
These circumstances have heightened speculation about whether Davis will remain in Chapel Hill for the next six seasons. North Carolina State, however, announced that no decisions had been made as of Saturday.
UNC Athletic Director Bubba Cunningham emphasized the importance of evaluating the program, stating, “It’s crucial at the end of each season to assess every part of our program for improvement.” He, alongside incoming athletic director Steve Newmark, will be discussing the future in the coming days.
The question of Davis’s return looms large. Officials indicated there may be little opportunity to raise funds for next year’s team, as many of UNC’s boosters have reportedly “lost faith in the program.” This sentiment likely worsened after Thursday’s game, which was marked by the Tar Heels reaching overtime despite being in the lead.
Injuries haven’t helped either; star freshman Caleb Wilson was missing from the lineup due to recent surgery on his thumb.
Davis took the helm in the 2021-22 season after the storied Roy Williams. He led the team to the NCAA Tournament championship game that year, only to witness another late collapse against Kansas, who ultimately claimed the title. Unfortunately, since that milestone, the team has not been able to make a strong showing. They missed the tournament in 2023 and made it to the Sweet 16 in 2024, but have now been knocked out in the first round for two straight seasons.
Throughout his tenure, Davis has maintained a record of 125 wins against 54 losses.
According to reports, Davis is under contract until June 30, 2030, with a buyout clause of $5.312 million if he is let go by April 1. Should he be dismissed, a significant coaching position in college sports will become available.
