Rob Lowe Critiques Hollywood’s Authenticity
Rob Lowe is shedding light on what he sees as a significant issue in Hollywood today. On his podcast “Literally! With Rob Lowe,” he discussed the lack of authenticity among younger actors, attributing this to various trends impacting the industry.
During a candid conversation with comedian Kevin Nealon, they touched on modern acting styles. Nealon pointed out how certain patterns and techniques seem increasingly prevalent in new performances.
Lowe noted the presence of what he views as “tricks” in acting today. He mused about how these tricks shape the rhythm of performances, leading him to wonder if these might be indicative of a broader trend. “You begin to recognize it more frequently,” he said, affirming Nealon’s observations.
“Absolutely, there’s a definite trend in acting right now,” he added. He elaborated on young actors and how, if everything fits neatly into categories, it might be beneficial. However, he expressed discomfort with this situation, suggesting it’s a reaction to the influence of platforms like Disney and the CW.
Lowe’s critiques extended beyond simple trends. “It’s behavior on screen that humanity hasn’t seen before,” he remarked. He emphasized that many young performers seem disconnected from real emotion and appear to be coached by less experienced directors.
This critique highlights the pipeline producing new talents from networks like Disney and The CW, raising questions about the future of authenticity in acting.
Reflecting on his own rise to fame as a member of the “Brat Pack” in the 1980s, Lowe noted the difference in how his generation approached acting. Films like “St. Elmo’s Fire” and “The Breakfast Club” had a different resonance with audiences. He reminisced about the unique challenges he faced as a young actor, including crucial choices that shaped his career.
Lowe has two sons with his wife, Sheryl Berkoff. His youngest, John Owen, has already ventured into acting, while the older brother, Matthew, is in finance. When John expressed his desire to follow in his father’s footsteps, Lowe offered straightforward advice: “just be a content creator.” John has even made strides in the industry, having sold shows to Apple TV+.
Lowe voiced pride in John’s achievements, noting the evolution in how one can pursue a career in entertainment today. “It’s much easier now, and I’m really happy he’s doing it,” he concluded.
