Andy Beshear Refers to JD Vance’s ‘Hillbilly Elegy’ as ‘Hillbilly Hate’ in VP’s Ohio Hometown

Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear is set to criticize Vice President J.D. Vance during a speech in Middletown, Ohio, focusing on Vance’s memoir.hillbilly elegy.

Beshear will address the Butler County Democratic Party event on Saturday night, in Vance’s hometown. He is expected to argue that Vance’s book promotes stereotypes about the residents of Kentucky, claiming it unfairly labels industrious coal miners as lazy. He also intends to highlight the issue of addiction, attributing blame to opioid manufacturers rather than the victims.

Further, Beshear is likely to ramp up his critique of Vance’s memoir, stating that it reflects “hillbilly hatred” and is simply “poverty tourism,” as Vance is not from Appalachia. He believes Ohio deserves a more capable senator and a better vice president, suggesting the need to reclaim the voters that Vance looks down upon.

He’ll point to his electoral successes in the Appalachian region, indicating that winning over communities like Vance’s requires genuine engagement. He mentioned that they won the county where Vance is from, a place that had leaned heavily towards Donald Trump in previous elections.

Vance’s memoir, published in 2016, recounts his upbringing in Middletown, Ohio, and his family’s Appalachian background. Initially well-received for its insights into working-class voters, it later received pushback from mainstream media for prioritizing personal responsibility over community support.

The film adaptation of the book gained traction after Vance became a prominent figure, even climbing Netflix’s top charts after his alignment with Trump as a potential running mate.

A senior editor at Breitbart News previously noted the compelling narrative within Vance’s book while praising its sincerity, highlighting his unconventional path to Yale.

In a prior video, Vance expressed his intent to portray life in communities like his own, emphasizing issues such as unemployment and addiction that he feels are often overlooked.

Beshear’s upcoming remarks are part of a broader strategy by Democratic leaders to challenge Vance, especially with speculations around his potential candidacy for president in 2028. Recently, former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg commented on Vance’s situation with Trump, pointing out the inconsistencies in his values.

In response to Beshear, Vance’s press secretary remarked that Beshear’s attempts to elevate his profile through attacks result in embarrassment. Regarding Buttigieg, she criticized his relevance, pointing out his recent career moves.

The discourse also evokes past controversy surrounding Vance’s comments on sensitive issues related to pregnancy and sexual assault, which he later clarified. Beshear, too, faced backlash for mocking Vance’s soda preferences but later apologized for it, humorously bringing a bottle of the drink to a press conference.
