SAN DIEGO — Dillon Mitchell’s Defensive Skills Shine
From his AAU days, Dillon Mitchell has always stood out for his defensive prowess, which was key in him becoming a five-star recruit from Montverde Academy in Florida. His unique ability to guard the rim and defend against perimeter players due to his impressive size has set him apart in the basketball world.
This versatility on defense has made him an essential player for St. John’s. Coach Rick Pitino mentioned, just before the second-round game between No. 4 Kansas and No. 5 St. John’s, how remarkable Mitchell’s height and athleticism are. As they prepare for the matchup, the 6-foot-8 Mitchell will undoubtedly face significant challenges on defense.
While there’s been some secrecy about their strategy for Kansas’ star freshman, Darrin Peterson, it’s evident that Mitchell will be matched up against the 6-foot-6 guard quite a bit.
“What he does on the court resembles NBA-level movement. He can score from anywhere,” Mitchell commented. “His pace can easily put defenders in foul trouble, and we need to make sure he knows he can’t just get away with that.” Peterson, a strong candidate for the No. 1 pick in the upcoming draft, averages 20.1 points a game and boasts a shooting percentage of 38.2% from beyond the arc.
Mitchell has seen success in limiting other sharpshooters this season, yet Peterson presents a different challenge altogether.
Injuries have been the main hurdle in Mitchell’s development throughout the year, rather than a specific opponent. He recently had a standout performance, scoring 26 points in the NCAA Tournament opener.
“He has a beautiful jump shot with a nice arc. His size poses a real problem for defenders,” Pitino noted, highlighting how effective Mitchell can be with the pick-and-roll. “His ability to attack the rim is impressive, and he possesses an NBA-style game, making him a future great player. We’re preparing extensively to contain him.”
St. John’s might just have an answer for Peterson, or at least someone capable of slowing him down. Mitchell has always embraced the challenge of defending against the best players from opposing teams.
“It’s something I take pride in,” he stated. “Coach Pitino has really helped me enhance every aspect of my defensive game.”
