William Shatner Shares Insights on 95th Birthday
William Shatner offered some reflections on life as he celebrated his 95th birthday. He revealed insights he’s gathered over the years, including two key pieces of advice. In a tweet posted on Sunday, he wrote, “At 95 years old, I’m still smoking. There are two things I’ve learned: never waste a good cigar and never trust anyone who tells you to ‘act your age.’
The iconic “Star Trek” actor also shared a couple of birthday photos, one showing him smiling on the beach and another where he’s enjoying a cigar.
This advice came shortly after Shatner disclosed that he required surgery following a horse-riding accident last year, sharing this at the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror Films’ 53rd Saturn Awards Ceremony in Burbank, California.
He mentioned that he rides a horse that’s quite capable in horsemanship but described a particularly harrowing instance where his horse was too quick and sent him flying. “I’m not a young stuntman anymore,” he noted, explaining that he hit the ground and broke his shoulder. He’s scheduled for a new type of surgery called reverse surgery on March 11.
Shatner reassured his fans about his recovery afterward, claiming, “If you put a ball in a socket and the socket into something, it comes out 10 hours later and the pain is gone. So that’s what I’m meandering towards.”
On March 12, he updated his Instagram followers regarding his surgery, clearing up rumors about his shoulder being “shattered” by confirming it was a “routine procedure.” He added, “I’m doing really well, so tomorrow I’m going to Cleveland for a tournament.”
In past discussions, Shatner has opened up about dealing with tinnitus, a condition he’s had since the 1990s, often leading to ringing or noises in the ears. He shared that his own tinnitus started during the filming of “Star Trek,” particularly during a special effects explosion that left a lasting impact on his hearing. He expressed empathy for others facing similar challenges, recognizing how difficult it can be.
Beyond “Star Trek,” Shatner’s impressive 70-year career includes roles in “TJ Hooker,” “The Practice,” “Boston Legal,” and “Miss Congeniality.”
