Ohio Teacher Pleads Guilty to Sexual Relationship with Student
A 28-year-old teacher from Ohio has admitted to having a sexual relationship with a 15-year-old student, reportedly making numerous phone calls and sending thousands of explicit emails to him.
Jamela Daboubi, previously a teacher at Horizon Science Academy in Columbus, entered a guilty plea in Franklin County Common Pleas Court, facing charges of gross sexual imposition and unlawful sexual conduct with a minor, as detailed in court documents.
The incident came to light when the boy’s aunt saw them in Daboubi’s car, prompting her to call law enforcement. This happened in April of the previous year.
According to a statement from the Franklin County Prosecuting Attorney, authorities were alerted when the aunt found her nephew and his teacher engaged in sexual activity in the car. The boy, under her guardianship, admitted to having a relationship that included kissing and touching.
Further questioning revealed that they had been communicating for several months. Police discovered extensive evidence on the boy’s cell phone, including hundreds of calls and thousands of text messages, where they expressed their feelings for each other.
Daboubi was terminated from her teaching position shortly after her arrest. Although a sentencing hearing was scheduled, it has been postponed to a later date.
The charges against her carry a possible maximum sentence of 18 months in prison. Reports indicate that the court may impose community supervision, ongoing counseling, the revocation of her teaching license, and community service as part of the sentence.
Additionally, Daboubi will be required to register as a sex offender following her plea.
Research on educator sexual misconduct shows a troubling trend over the past 20 years in the U.S. While stories of female teachers and male students often make headlines, statistics reveal that male educators are responsible for a significant majority of these cases, many of which remain unreported.
