Tragic Shooting Incident Involving College Student

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has urged Chicago officials to enhance their immigration enforcement protocols following the arrest of a man alleged to have fatally shot a college freshman.

Identified as Sheridan Gorman, an 18-year-old student at Loyola University Chicago, she was at Tobey Prinz Beach with friends in the early hours of Thursday, hoping to catch a glimpse of the Northern Lights.

DHS stated that a 25-year-old suspect, Jose Medina Medina, allegedly approached Gorman, masked, and shot her as she attempted to escape. In a released statement, the DHS emphasized the need for accountability.

DHS characterized Medina-Medina as an unlawful immigrant from Venezuela, attributing his presence in the U.S. to failures in the current administration’s policies.

“Medina Medina should not have been in our nation, having been previously released by the Biden administration,” DHS remarked on social media. “He had also been arrested for shoplifting in Chicago, only to be released once more.”

Gorman’s family echoed the sentiment of governmental failure, expressing their heartbreak over the circumstances that allowed such an incident to occur.

“We are profoundly let down by the policies and negligence that enabled this person to be in a position to commit this heinous act,” they declared in a statement. “The repercussions of systemic failures are tangible and, in our case, they’re irreversible.”

Medina-Medina faces charges including first-degree murder, though he did not attend his court hearing, remaining in the hospital. A prosecutor indicated to Judge Luciano Panici that the suspect is currently being treated for tuberculosis.

DHS Acting Assistant Secretary Lauren Biss criticized previous administration policies, stating that Gorman had been “failed by open border policies” and the decision to release the suspect.
