Taliban Releases US Prisoner Under Trump Administration's Influence

Taliban Releases American Prisoner

On Tuesday, the Taliban released an American, just under two weeks after the Trump administration labeled Afghanistan a state involved in illegal detentions.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio noted that in early March, Afghanistan referred to itself as a “state sponsor of unjust detention” and called for the release of Dennis Coyle along with any other Americans wrongfully held. The release was confirmed by the foreign ministry, which mistakenly referred to Coyle as “Dennis Quail.”

Dennis Coyle, who is 64, was apprehended in January 2025 for allegedly “violating laws in force in Afghanistan.” He has been working in the country legally for nearly two decades, reportedly maintaining good relationships with various government departments, his family commented.

The State Department has not replied to inquiries regarding this matter.

Rubio shared a post on social media, expressing that he had requested a meeting between Coyle’s family and the Secretary to aid in securing his release back in March 2026. Following the announcement from the Taliban, Rubio congratulated Coyle on being freed.

He stated that during his second term, Coyle has joined over 100 Americans released in the last 15 months. Rubio also labeled the Taliban’s decision a “positive step,” but emphasized that “more work is needed” and reiterated calls for the release of all Americans wrongfully detained.

His statement highlighted the continuing demand for the return of Mahmoud Habibie, Paul Overby, and other wrongfully detained Americans, insisting that the Taliban halt their hostage diplomacy.
