Torrid Closes Over 150 Stores Across the U.S.

California-based women’s clothing retailer Torrid has announced the closure of more than 150 locations nationwide, which isn’t exactly a great sign for traditional retail stores.

This plus-size brand, catering to women sized 10 to 30, identified 151 “structurally unproductive” stores to shut down last year. This included 77 closures in just the fourth quarter. The details were shared in a recent report to shareholders.

It’s still uncertain how many of these closures will impact California specifically.

Torrid began in 2001 in East Los Angeles and has since grown significantly, evolving from a single store in Brea Mall into a prominent national player.

As of early 2026, the company operates 483 stores across all 50 states, in addition to locations in Puerto Rico and Canada.

In a report, CEO Lisa Harper mentioned, “We enter 2026 with a strong operational foundation of optimized channels, products, and prices.” She expressed optimism about attracting more customers and boosting loyalty among existing ones, noting early signs of positive changes in the business.

Last year proved challenging for many long-established retailers. Brands like Forever 21, Lou 21, and Claire’s shut their doors, while others, including American Eagle Outfitters and Victoria’s Secret, also conducted significant store reductions.
