Ilona Maher isn’t just a standout player in rugby; she embodies the spirit of teamwork. At 29, this Vermont native maintains a strong sense of community, especially during workouts. When fans ask about her fitness routine, she candidly responds, “It’s just what my coach told me to do.”

“I see myself as a team athlete,” Maher explained, emphasizing her commitment to following her coach’s plan. Her training typically involves a mix of lifting weights and running, always with the aim of becoming stronger each time.

Recently, she drew attention on social media for her body image reflections, particularly regarding her shoulders after a recent encounter. “I worried they looked too big,” she shared. “I even checked myself in the mirror. I sort of wondered if I was attractive enough.” Despite moments of vulnerability, Maher advocates for body acceptance, recognizing her physicality as a source of strength.

Her robust thighs have become a defining feature of her athleticism, and she made headlines when she posed nude for the cover of Sports Illustrated Swimsuit in 2024, celebrating Team USA’s first Olympic bronze in Rugby Sevens. But, she insists that aesthetics don’t guide her gym sessions; “I’m looking for strength,” she asserts.

It’s no surprise that genetics play a crucial role in her physique. Jokingly, she suggests, “To get thighs like mine, you should probably have parents who are built like brick houses.” Her training focuses on a full-body workout with perfect form, complemented by specific exercises like Bulgarian split squats and leg presses.

“I-I was just blessed. Amen,” she modestly remarked, questioning what more could be said about her advantages. Recovery, too, is vital to her routine. She emphasizes proper nutrition, highlighting the importance of protein and fiber.

In partnership with Perfect Bar, she discussed the snacks packed with prebiotic fiber and protein, underscoring the need to replenish after intense workouts. “Food is energy, but it’s also comfort,” Maher shares, expressing her preference for tasty food. “I don’t enjoy eating things that taste bad.”

Her dietary choices lean heavily towards whole foods, including eggs, pasta, and, of course, cheese. “I really love cheese,” she added with a smile.

After a solid workout, she recommends consuming something rich in protein and fiber for recovery. “Without proper fueling, all your gym time could go to waste,” she noted.

Maher has grown accustomed to men trying to challenge her in the gym. Though occasionally embarrassed, she finds their surprise amusing. “I enjoy fitness classes with older men,” she quipped. “It’s energizing when I hold my own against them.”
