Undocumented Immigrant Shot and Killed Sheridan Gorman as She Fled for Safety

Unauthorized Immigrant Accused of Killing 18-Year-Old Sheridan Gorman

Student Killed in Chicago Shooting

Prosecutors have stated that an undocumented immigrant was responsible for the fatal shooting of 18-year-old Loyola University Chicago freshman, Sheridan Gorman, who was trying to escape the scene.

Jose Medina-Medina, a 25-year-old from Venezuela, has been charged with Gorman’s murder following an incident at Chicago’s Toby Prinz Beach. The shooting occurred during what was described as an unprovoked attack, according to police reports.

Details released from the prosecutors paint a picture of the tragic events that unfolded on the night of March 19. Gorman was with friends when she noticed someone hiding nearby. She warned her friends, but it led to them being chased by Medina. When Gorman attempted to flee, she was shot in the back. Tragically, she was declared dead at the scene.

While Gorman’s friends managed to find shelter in a nearby grassy area, Medina reportedly returned to an apartment, and witnesses noted he was dressed in mostly black, including a face mask.

A GoFundMe campaign has been established by friends and family to raise money for a memorial service and to create a scholarship in her name. The page reflects the deep love and impact Gorman had on those who knew her.

Meanwhile, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) confirmed that Medina-Medina was in the country illegally, having been apprehended at the southern border in May 2023. Despite this, he was released into the U.S. due to the policies in place at the time.

After being arrested in June for shoplifting, he was released again, remaining unconnected to ICE. Currently, he is still in police custody and reportedly receiving treatment for tuberculosis.
