Keith Hernandez’s Ongoing Residual Income from Seinfeld

Even if Keith Hernandez, the iconic former first baseman for the New York Mets, decides to step away from announcing, he still has a financial safety net. Since becoming a commentator for the team in 1999, he’s won numerous local Emmy Awards for his skills behind the microphone. Yet, after leaving the field, he ventured into acting.

Hernandez made guest appearances on the famous sitcom Seinfeld, portraying himself in three episodes. His most notable role was in the two-part episode titled “The Boyfriend,” which aired in 1992. In this storyline, he becomes romantically involved with Elaine, much to the dismay of Kramer and Newman, who hold a grudge against him due to a spitting incident that occurred in 1987.

This particular episode introduced Hernandez’s now-legendary line, “I’m Keith Hernandez.” Interestingly, this phrase has become a recurring reference in two documentaries focused on his life.

Thanks in part to the episode’s success, Hernandez still enjoys a steady stream of income from residuals. “The amounts vary, but on an annual basis, we’re still making close to $5,000. It’s the gift that keeps on giving,” he shared with a podcast, adding, “Remember one thing, I was a guest star.”

In contrast, former Yankees outfielder Paul O’Neal, who also had a memorable cameo in the show, mentioned in 2024 that his residual earnings were significantly lower. In a light-hearted interview during a Yankees game, he revealed he receives about $57, saying, “It’s not a huge amount of time, but it’s a nice reminder that you were on the show. It’s kind of cool.”

The Seinfeld series featured other notable Yankees, including Derek Jeter and Bernie Williams, and even had George Steinbrenner portrayed by a voice actor and co-creator Larry David. Some unused footage of the actual Steinbrenner was also filmed. It seems that no matter the amount, these moments remain cherished memories for those involved.
