Lavonte David Announces Retirement After 14 Seasons with Buccaneers
Former Tampa Bay Buccaneers linebacker Lavonte David revealed his retirement during a press conference on Tuesday.
At 36 years old, David leaves behind a remarkable legacy, having played 14 seasons with the Buccaneers. This makes him the longest-serving player in the team’s history, and he was a significant part of their Super Bowl-winning squad. Over 12 years, he also served as the team’s captain.
“First of all, I want to say, ‘God is great.’ I’ve played football for 14 years, and honestly, I never thought I’d be standing here,” David stated.
Since joining the NFL in 2012, David distinguished himself as a standout player, leading the league with 1,171 total tackles and ranking second for tackles for loss (177) during his career. Remarkably, he is among only three players with at least 40 sacks and 35 or more takeaways, alongside legends Ray Lewis and Brian Urlacher.
David expressed that he always played for the love of the game. He described his journey as fulfilling: “Every time I stepped on the field, I needed to show that I was right and that the doubters were wrong.”
He became emotional reminiscing about his late parents and the support they provided throughout his life. “Growing up where I did wasn’t easy,” David shared, visibly moved. “But they made it work for me. It’s only when you have kids that you understand the sacrifices they made.”
Reflecting on his family, David recounted the hardships, saying, “We didn’t have a car, which meant my mother would take me to work in the one we had while my father would take me to practice on my bike.” He emphasized the invaluable lessons these experiences taught him.
After losing his mother in 2016, David admitted that his motivation for football diminished. He wanted to help her realize her dreams after she had done so much for him.
David tied the franchise’s tackle record with 1,714 in his last regular season game and ranks third in all-time games played for the Buccaneers, just behind Derrick Brooks and Ronde Barber.
Selected in the second round of the 2012 NFL Draft from Nebraska, David’s accolades include one Pro Bowl selection, and he was named first-team All-Pro once and second-team All-Pro twice. His father also passed away shortly after the Buccaneers triumphed in Super Bowl LV back in 2021.
