Ryan Gosling's late-night mention boosts Florida bakery

A small bakery in Florida is experiencing an unexpected boost in business thanks to a mention by actor Ryan Gosling on late-night television.

The buzz started when Gosling appeared on “Late Night with Seth Meyers,” where he enthusiastically talked about a bakery in Tallahassee known for its delicious pastries.

Gosling highlighted “The Cake Shop,” calling attention to their Pop-Tart-style offerings and urging viewers to check them out.

The actor’s connection to the bakery comes through a friend: the shop is run by the sister of Donna Richards, who is a wardrobe supervisor for “Saturday Night Live.”

During his interview, Gosling lightheartedly mentioned that he often enjoyed these pastries while working backstage. “She owns a bakery in Tallahassee, Florida, where she makes the most amazing Pop-Tarts,” he said. “I need to order these Pop-Tarts.”

This shout-out led to a flurry of interest and orders at the bakery.

According to local news outlet WCTV, the bakery was inundated with calls and requests for their sweet treats.

Owner Linda Richards expressed her surprise at the sudden surge in attention. “It was a complete shock,” she told WCTV.

The bakery’s signature items are called “popped” tarts, and while Gosling requested the strawberry flavor, the shop also offers blueberry, cinnamon, and peanut butter and jelly versions.

Richards shared that Gosling often receives Pop-Tarts as he starts hosting segments, adding a personal touch to their connection.

The Cake Shop has been serving delicious baked goods in Florida’s capital for over 25 years, known for its homemade desserts and classic recipes that range from cakes to specialty pastries.

Richards, who comes from a culinary background and grew up cooking for a large family, has integrated many family recipes into her baking repertoire. Her famous chocolate chip cookies, for example, are “just like Grandma used to make.”

Celebrity endorsements can sometimes spark impressive growth for small businesses. It’s a rarity for a family-owned bakery to gain national attention, but when it happens, it can lead to immediate results.

In this instance, the timing was particularly interesting. The bakery was actually closed for spring break when Gosling’s comments aired, resulting in a backlog of demand upon their return.

Richards shared her astonishment, saying, “I was transported to another universe… I mean, it’s huge.”
